In Eleanor the Great, June Squibb (Thelma) phenomenally plays the title role of the spirited 94-year-old Eleanor who tells a story that takes on a life of its own. Eleanor Morgenstein has always been very involved with the people around her. After a death that turns her world upside down, she decides to move from Florida to New York. She moves in with her daughter and grandson in the hope of strengthening their family bond, but only feels lonely and invisible there. One day, she accidentally ends up at a speaking group where she tells a story that unintentionally garners her a lot of attention. While a young journalism student sees her as a friend and mentor, the consequences for Eleanor are far-reaching. When the situation eventually threatens to spiral out of control, she can no longer avoid the truth.
Eleanor the Great is the directorial debut of Scarlett Johansson. In her film, she addresses themes such as aging, family, grief, and betrayal. A story about friendship and history that shows how complicated we can be as humans.
