  • After being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.

"Ask not why you were imprisoned. Ask why you were set free."

In Oldboy, Park Chan-wook took on an extreme Japanese revenge manga, in which the arch-villain Oh Dae-su (played by Choi Min-sik) wakes up after a drunken night in a stark, hotel-like room. For fifteen years, he remains imprisoned there, with only a television for company. When he is unexpectedly released, a visually overwhelming, nihilistic storm of revenge unfolds, exposing the tragedy of a desensitized and deeply sorrowful human being. The film, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2004, remains an unforgettable, confronting experience—with an urgent piece of advice for voters of the Party for the Animals: take the dog for a walk before the infamous octopus scene in the sushi bar.
