The 1990s band Pavement was the "most influential and best band in the world," according to director Alex Ross Perry. And so he made Pavements, a fragmented mix of documentary and fiction unlike any other film about a rock group.
And then—the plural "Pavements" is not a typo—Perry wants to look at the band in different ways. He charts the preparations for their reunion, records the off-Broadway jukebox musical Slanted and Enchanted with Pavement songs, and is working on a classic biopic, the surprising Range Life. And then there's the Pavement exhibition, which paints a fictionalized picture of the band. Perry combines all the elements in a blender, resulting in Pavements.
About Popdocs
Every third Monday of the month, Concordia, Metropool, and Muziekbank Enschede program a music film or documentary. The film is always briefly introduced, and this one will be introduced by Theo Hakkert.
Theo Hakkert was a journalist for Tubantia for over 35 years. In the 90s and later, he interviewed numerous pop artists and groups for the newspaper. Among them Keith Richards, Sting, REM, Wilco, Deborah Harry, Townes Van Zandt, Phil Collins, Lou Reed, Curtis Mayfield, Beastie Boys, Elvis Costello and so on, and he reviewed new albums. He is not always an avid concertgoer, with a preference for alt.country. Every week he spins an hour of brand new rock, pop, country, folk and reggae on Hofstreek FM. Previously he was in The Last Waltz, the iconic concert film of The Band.
