  • Three brand-new films about PLANETART and media art in Enschede.

An evening program with three short films, including the world premiere of the video documentary on the history of Kees de Groot and PLANETART. Presented in collaboration between PLANETART, Rijksmuseum Twenthe, and Concordia surrounding the exhibition Enschede. A Free Space for Experimentation at Rijksmuseum Twenthe.

    The program:

PLANETART ARCHIVES: THE HISTORY OF KEES DE GROOT AND PLANETART 1978 - 2004
A production by HET VIDEOGILDE aka Julian and Edwin van Aalderen.

This video is part of the PLANETART ARCHIVES project with an exhibition at Rijksmuseum Twenthe in 2024, a website with online blogs, interviews, and a book by Lars van der Miesen. The video broadly shows the emergence of Dutch avant-garde media art from Twente and the AKI art academy, centered around artist Kees de Groot and his colleagues who traveled the world. The documentary provides a concise overview of a bygone period from the analog years 1978 to 2004, featuring historical footage and interviews with Arno Coenen, Wilja Jurg, Willem Heerbaart, and Julian van Aalderen. This period ends in 2004, with the birth of the GOGBOT festival. The ARCHIVES part 2 (2004 - 2023) is in the making...

    MAUHRO'S WIJK
A video from 1984 by Kees de Groot, commissioned by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam for the first international exhibition on video art: THE LUMINOUS IMAGE.

When Rijksmuseum Twenthe opened its doors in 1930, Twente was still almost untamed ground in terms of visual arts. Nevertheless, the region, and especially Enschede, developed after World War II as a breeding ground for the avant-garde. How could such a fertile environment arise here for the latest developments in art? Is it due to the DNA of Enschede, its location outside the Randstad, or perhaps a unique combination of circumstances?

An important chapter in this story is the prominent role that the AKI art academy and Kees de Groot played in the development of media art in the 1980s. In the exhibition, the video MAUHRO'S WIJK from 1984 by De Groot takes a prominent place.

    VIAORAL live in Tokyo 2011
A preview as part of THE PLANETART ARCHIVES part 2 (2004 - 2023), featuring a recording of a performance by the Twente collective VIAORAL at the nightclub SuperDeluxe in Tokyo during the Japan Media Art Festival 2011.

The evening will also include various short A/V fragments from the PLANETART archives and will conclude with a Q&A session hosted by Mark Drenth (head of film at Concordia) and Jasmijn Weener (project leader exhibitions on behalf of Rijksmuseum Twenthe).
