Artist Esmay Groot Koerkamp is collaborating with Enschede-based Marjolein Smits on Couplet 2.0 #3.
From August 14 to September 6, the art project Couplet 2.0 will be presented in EXPO 3.
The third and final edition of Concordia’s art project Couplet 2.0 is in the hands of Esmay Groot Koerkamp. Esmay studied at AKI in Enschede and now lives and works in Deventer. “I am very interested in folk tales. In these stories you see what occupied people in a certain time and what mattered to them. I use this in my own work by depicting contemporary social issues and giving the figures in my drawings symbolic value. This is also what I want to explore during Couplet 2.0. I’m curious about other people’s stories. Our lives are about being born, enduring trials, making love, dying, and being reborn. The search for your true self is timeless and exists in every person, regardless of education, background, or income. In the end, we are all a small piece of humanity.”
Esmay took on the challenge and began a dialogue with an Enschede resident about art. From all applications she selected participant Marjolein Smits. Their first meeting with the public took place on January 31.

About Couplet 2.0
Concordia’s project Couplet 2.0 pairs two very different people to spark new perspectives on art. A resident of Enschede or Twente (experienced or not, art lover or not, adult, child, mixed together) and an artist meet to share thoughts and ideas, ultimately creating an exhibition or final project together.
The project aims to create space for new ideas about art, a space where fixed patterns of thought are challenged and prejudices undermined. That’s why it proudly carries the title Couplet 2.0.
Previous editions of Couplet 2.0
The first edition featured artist Jessica van Deursen and Rens Weustink (December 10, 2018 to March 17, 2019). For three months, Enschede resident Rens worked together with Jessica. They first met on December 10 in Expo 4, and on February 24, 2019, they presented the result of their project to visitors.
