Artists from the studio De Kunsthaven are presenting their work at Concordia.

In this exhibition series we give the stage to artists from the city. Enschede has much to offer in the field of visual arts, with initiatives and projects set up by artists, as well as workshops, festivals, and events. With this exhibition we create an opportunity for artists and visitors to meet and to engage in conversation. Who are these artists, what do they create, and what inspiration do they find in the city that connects us all?

De Kunsthaven is a foundation committed to providing affordable studio spaces to professional artists in a former school building on Borstelweg. Thirteen artists from diverse disciplines have found their own safe haven there, working individually or collaboratively on their professional practice. Each year the foundation organizes an open day to maintain contact with the city and its residents. Throughout the year the artists also host workshops and exhibitions that are open to everyone.

    “verborgen leven / hidden life”
Artist Reina de Vries wrote the following concept text for the exhibition by De Kunsthaven:

    VERBORGEN LEVEN / HIDDEN LIFE
For me it speaks to the situation in the world
where so many people are forced or choose to hide.
From the pressure of life, from war, from violence,
    from the relentless pace.
Although it seems that everything is visible,
with television and social media showing more than ever before,
    the inner life continues.
That inner life remains hidden, cherished even.
As artists and image-makers we try
to give form to what moves us and touches us.
That life too is hidden, in our minds and in our studios
where the work begins to take shape.
Until we show it and hope to evoke something in the viewer.
Yet the response often remains hidden from the maker.
Hidden life is about our individual experience, our perception.
It is what keeps us standing, and what sometimes finds its way outward.
