In the new series DOUBLET, we juxtapose the work of two artists and let them engage in dialogue with each other, with each other's work, and with the audience. In doing so, we explore how artists with diverse work relate to each other, how they inspire each other, and how viewers and creators can come together.
Marleen and Petra kick things off, and the duos that will follow them over the next two years are Thijs Ebbe Fokkens & Silke Schönfeld, Roos van Haaften & Heike Gallmeijer, and Malte Bruns & Inge Meijer.
In DOUBLET, the exhibition space is transformed into a studio where two different artists work on a new exhibition. These artists did not know each other before and were not (well) acquainted with each other's work. They give shape to their ideas and stories in different ways, work with different materials, and do not necessarily have the same outlook on life.
Concordia is curious to see what happens when both artists meet and start working together. Does it determine the work you create, or does it change your idea about space or art, does it influence your artistry? How do you experience the other's working method, can you apply it or learn something from it?
But we are also curious about how it is for a visitor; what is the added value of seeing the construction and creation of new work, how does a conversation with the maker affect your way of looking at and thinking about art? Watch and talk with the artists and our programmer.
This project is made possible in part by the Mondriaan Fund, the Ader Academy, and the Municipality of Enschede.
Film portrait
During the construction, the artists had various conversations, including with our programmer. Watch a film portrait here in which both artists talk about their work.
