Every year, Concordia organizes an exhibition with big art for little people. Because children know very well what they find fun, beautiful, exciting, or boring in an artwork, this year we asked them to think along with us. A team of six wonderfully creative child-curators show us, their classmates, their parents, and everyone who visits, what captures their imagination.
SAMEN! is an exhibition developed for children, together with children. Visual artists from the Netherlands and Germany who work with the theme of “together,” or who create artworks that only come to life when you engage with them collectively, have been invited to take part. Among the participating artists are Daan den Houter, Linda Nieuwstad, Danielle Spoelman, and Wiebke Bartsch. Danielle and Wiebke’s drawings emerge through their joint collaboration on a single piece. Daan describes his own work as a “social sculpture,” a piece that only fully takes shape through the interaction of the audience. The child-curator team helped choose the artists, wrote the wall texts, interviewed the artists, and assisted with setting up the exhibition.
Children are challenged in this exhibition to look at art together and to talk about it. Because the exhibition has been co-created and co-curated by children, we demonstrate that their perspective on art is just as important as that of adults.
SAMEN!
The exhibition is called SAMEN! because creating an exhibition together is more fun than doing it alone — and looking at, making, and experiencing art is also much more fun together. Concordia has been transformed into a house with different rooms: a front yard, a living room, a bedroom, a studio, a storage cellar, and an attic. Each room hosts a different artwork. For example: which artwork would you want to see or hear in a bedroom, and which one in an attic? The child-curator team De Superrrkunstkids chose artworks that fit the atmosphere of each room. This way, every room has its own artwork, and you can even create your own in the studio. Will you join us?
