2029, New Port City, Japan. Cybernetic enhancements have become the norm. Human brains are directly connected to the internet. Cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, an agent with the secret police unit Section 9, is tracking down a mysterious artificial intelligence hacking cyborg brains to spark a political uprising.
The influence of cyberpunk classic Ghost in the Shell on contemporary science fiction cannot be overstated. It’s regarded as one of the best anime films of all time, and the Wachowskis cited it as a major inspiration for The Matrix. With the release of the new animated series, Imagine returns to the source, as this philosophical existentialist masterpiece feels as relevant as ever. Based on Masamune Shirow’s 1989 manga of the same name, Ghost in the Shell is set in a future in which a cybernetic body (the ‘shell’) can house a human consciousness (the ‘ghost’).
