Agnes and William Shakespeare appear to be an ordinary family in 16th-century England. Agnes is a healer with a mysterious aura and extensive knowledge of herbs and the human body. William is a well-known writer, whose ambitions often clash with the family's daily life. Their daughter Susanna takes care of the twins Judith and Hamnet, while the village around them struggles with poverty, disease, and fear. The threat of the plague constantly looms over them, and the loss that the disease will bring is at the heart of the story.
Hamnet tells the powerful love story that inspired Shakespeare's timeless masterpiece Hamlet, featuring Jessie Buckley (Wicked Little Letters, The Lost Daughter) and Paul Mescal (Aftersun, All of Us Strangers) in lead roles.
Based on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell, director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) has created a film about grief, love, and creativity.
