In 1983, the life of the smart, funny John Davidson looks promising. The talented football goalkeeper dreams of a professional career, and he is also among the best at school. But then he suddenly starts swearing and moving uncontrollably. At a time when Tourette's syndrome was barely understood even by doctors, he becomes isolated from the world around him: he is bullied at school and his relationship with his family deteriorates. Everything changes when, as a twenty-something, he meets Dottie, the down-to-earth mother of a former classmate who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer. The unexpected bond that develops between them changes John's life: with Dottie’s unconditional support, he finds a purpose and the self-confidence to be himself.
I Swear tells the inspiring, true story of the Scot John Davidson, a prominent spokesperson for Tourette's who, with his sincerity, resilience, and humor, helps the world understand what it means to live with the condition. With the film adaptation of John's story, director Kirk Jones not only underscores the importance of education, understanding, and acceptance regarding Tourette's, but simultaneously demonstrates the power of friendship and communities. Thanks in part to a magnificent cast led by Robert Aramayo, I Swear manages to touch many hearts.
The film won the IFFR Audience Award this year and was also awarded three BAFTAs, including Best Actor for Aramayo and his moving portrayal of Davidson.
