Jimpa is a sensitive and authentic drama about queer identity, parenthood, and the complex dynamics between three generations. Filmmaker Sophie Hyde (Good Luck To You, Leo Grande) exposes both chosen and biological family ties in her semi-autobiographical film. Starring Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Father) and John Lithgow (Conclave, The Crown).
Filmmaker Hannah takes her non-binary teenager Frances to Amsterdam to visit her father Jim. Frances affectionately calls him Jimpa and hopes to stay with him for a year. This confronts Hannah with her parenting and sense of responsibility. Jim insists that Frances discover the queer life in Amsterdam. But he cannot escape the fact that the freedom he came to Amsterdam for is not the same as that of his grandchild. Jimpa was selected for the Sundance Film Festival and the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Alongside international stars, we see Dutch actors like Hans Kesting, Romana Vrede, and Zoë Love Smith.
