In her projects, Kamali van Bochove combines photography and film, exploring what happens when they meet.

This encounter leads to either a marriage or a separation, but what I find most exciting is exploring the boundaries between these two media: where do they shift? When does a photograph become cinematic, and when does a film become photographic? This interplay between photography and film, the boundaries of both media, their encounter and their similarities, form the basis of Kamali’s artistic practice.

For the window video exhibition at Concordia, I plan to show some experiments from my current graduation film On a Small Island, In a Big Island (2022). A film in which I poetically (through text) explore my relationship with arriving and departing, reconsidered through my grandfather’s (moving) family archive images and my own images.

Kamali van Bochove is graduating this year from the Piet Zwart Institute with a master’s degree in Lens Based Media. She was born in Curaçao and has lived in Rotterdam since 1999. Thematically, she focuses on exploring her own identity in relation to that of her family. The family history of diaspora makes distance an important element of her identity. Through her work, she tries to make the absence of presence visible. She explores the distance within herself and to others by making the intangible tangible.
