When fate brings the bored music teacher JJ together with friends Naoise and Liam Óg, it marks the beginning of an unprecedented Irish hip-hop act. Rapping in their mother tongue, the rebellious rap trio Kneecap breaks through in Belfast and soon becomes the face of a civil rights movement aimed at saving the Irish language. As the public debate erupts, the police and politicians do their utmost to silence the anarchistic trio. In this wildly original sex, drugs, and hip-hop biopic, Kneecap plays themselves and shout a global battle cry in defense of their cultural heritage.
The film will be briefly introduced by Eva Siemerink, who studied film and television studies and wrote her thesis on the film. She will first provide some context about post-conflict Northern Ireland. Then she will discuss how the film uses the Irish language, nationalist symbols, and hip-hop as forms of cultural resistance and identity formation.
