  • Compelling Japanese success film about friendship and rivalry.

After the death of his father, head of a Yakuza gang, Kikuo is taken under the wing of the famous kabuki actor Hanjiro Hanai. Together with Shunsuke, Hanjiro's only son, he becomes his apprentice. The two young men grow up as brothers and decide to dedicate their lives - with the necessary competition - to the art of kabuki. For decades, their relationship and dedication to the art form are put to the test, driven by their shared desire for fame on stage.

Kokuho is an epic ode to this kabuki art form. A visual and dramatic spectacle, featuring top actors in the three lead roles. It became the most visited Japanese live-action film ever and was nominated this year for the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling.
