Judicial bailiff Orsolya must carry out the court's orders in accordance with her profession and removes a gambling-addicted alcoholic who has illegally squatted a basement. This has far-reaching consequences for the addict and her own conscience; he claims he will pack his things, goes into the basement, and commits suicide. The shock is immense for forty-something Orsolya.
Was the eviction morally justifiable? Could she have acted differently? And what is her role as an executor of court orders that serve real estate developers in Cluj, a provincial town in Transylvania that wants to ride the wave of market-driven neoliberalism? These are a few of the questions that the director sends the main character on a quest to answer. Desperately, Orsolya tries to find answers among colleagues and friends, hoping to hear something that might alleviate her guilt.
Kontinental '25 – a nod to Roberto Rossellini's Europe '51, in which Ingrid Bergman immerses herself in charity as an unhappy diplomat's wife – is once again a typical Radu Jude film: lightly absurd situations as razor-sharp satire on contemporary Romania.
