The students all have backgrounds outside the Netherlands; they have left their homes behind and are building something new here. Which place or country do they call home, what did home look like there, and how does it look now? How do you feel at home, regardless of your surroundings?
The paintings, installations, and sculptures on display in our kunstruimte—both visible and audible—explore the idea of home. What does home sound like, what are familiar sounds, or what images remind you of your home from the past? What are the future dreams of your dream home, perhaps a row house or a treehouse?
The Kunstblikken exhibition features work by seven artists from Belgium and the Netherlands, as well as students from Het Stedelijk ISK.
Since February of this year, students from Eritrea, Ukraine, Somalia, China, Germany, Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Kurdistan have been coming to Concordia weekly to work on the theme “Wat is thuis” under the guidance of our educational staff. They were encouraged to explore their own creativity and language skills through guest lectures and visits to the Rijksmuseum Twenthe and the Drawing Centre Diepenheim.
During this period, they also met the artists in the exhibition: Andrea Freckmann, Tessa Hendriks, Elise ’t Hart, Inez de Brauw, Isa Roelink, Jonas Vansteenkiste, and Chanella ter Haar. The students and artists engaged in dialogue about the theme “Wat is thuis?”
A so-called living room has been set up in the exhibition; just as people come together at home in a living room, this exhibition space has been arranged with sofas, tables, and drawings made by the students. Among the works of the artists, each student also created a one-square-meter piece. Wooden frames are placed on the walls, on the floor, or in the middle of the spaces, filled in entirely according to the students’ own ideas.
The exhibition can be viewed from 12 July to 15 September 2024. You are warmly invited to the opening on 12 July from 14:00, where the students will be present.
