Christine, or Lady Bird as she prefers to be called, is an awkward teenager in her final year of high school who wants just one thing: to study as far from home as possible, away from her unemployed father and her mother, who is far too involved in her life. On paper, not a particularly original story, but in the hands of debut director Gerwig (who also wrote the semi-autobiographical screenplay) it becomes a wonderfully honest coming-of-age drama. With strong lead performances from Ronan (as Lady Bird) and Metcalf (as mother Marion). The film received five Oscar nominations but ultimately went home empty-handed.
