With Gael García Bernal as Ferdinand Magellan, renowned director Lav Diaz examines the life of the Portuguese explorer from a strong political perspective. Magellan's years-long journey through unknown waters is marred by distrust, mutiny, and madness.
Magellan is the new film from Filipino master director Lav Diaz (Norte, the End of History; The Woman Who Left). For his latest film, Diaz has cast a well-known actor for the lead role for the first time, Gael García Bernal (Neruda, The Motorcycle Diaries, Y Tu Mamá Tambíen). Diaz allows him to portray both the human and inhumane sides of Magellan, thereby crumbling the – still revered in Spain – myth of the strict but just colonizer. The stunning cinematography is by Arthur Tort, the regular cameraman of Albert Serra.
