In this warm-hearted claymation, eight-year-old Mary (voiced by Toni Collette) is bullied at school and has no friends. So she writes a letter from Australia to a random person in the United States. This sparks an unusual pen-pal friendship with 44-year-old Max (voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman), who has Asperger's syndrome and struggles to make friends in a conventional way. The film is full of clever visual gags and witty wordplay, and despite its clay appearance, it's a touching, deeply human ode to friendship. Director Adam Elliot already won an Oscar in 2003 for his short claymation film Harvie Krumpet.
The open-air film festival Movies at the Park is a collaboration between Concordia, Craft District Enschede, and Van Heekpark in Enschede. The films start around 9:15 PM, just after sunset.
