"fall. get back up."
In 1990s Los Angeles, thirteen-year-old Stevie is trying to find his way amid a troubled home situation, a domineering older brother, and a sense of loneliness at school. When he befriends a group of older skaters, he discovers a world where friendship, freedom, and adventure are central. At the same time, he learns hard lessons about growing up, peer pressure, and the risks that come with searching for one's own identity.
With Mid90s, actor and writer Jonah Hill makes his impressive directorial debut. The film is a loving tribute to the culture he grew up in: the music, fashion, street language, and skate culture of the nineties come to life in an authentic way. Inspired by the raw energy of films like Kids, but with a warmer and more human perspective, Hill paints a bittersweet, comic, and touching portrait of a boy trying to find his place in a world full of temptations and uncertainties. The result is an atmospheric coming-of-age film that feels both nostalgic and timeless.
A24/7
What do Moonlight, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Midsommar have in common? Not the cast, not the writers, not the cinematographers, and certainly not the directors… No, what these three films have in common is the production company/distributor A24. The American A24 is a true success story: film lovers perk up when they see the A24 logo in the opening credits. The company was founded in 2012 by Daniel Katz, John Hodges, and David Fenkel, all of whom were still under forty at that time. Initially, A24 only got involved in the distribution of films. They pick up films that often struggle to find a large audience. Because the films are different, innovative, and because the creators take risks. In 2016, they turn a new page. For the first time in their young existence, they produce a film themselves. And once again, it hits the mark, as the first film A24 invests in with their own money is Barry Jenkins' later Oscar-winning Moonlight.
In the nearly 15 years that A24 has existed, they have produced or distributed around 150 films. 150 films without superheroes, cliché characters, or wafer-thin plots, but with real flesh-and-blood people, with their own, unknown stories that deserve to be seen on the big screen once again. That's why this summer; A24/7 - a modest selection of seven titles from the rich A24 catalog.
