Surprisingly relevant 'classic' about an ambitious Pakistani and his white punk friend who, despite many setbacks, open a luxury laundrette in 80s London.
The film tells the story of wealthy Pakistani Omar (Gordon Warnecke) and underprivileged Brit Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis) who, amidst various racial, political, and ideological tensions around them, start a laundrette. And a relationship!
Perhaps My Beautiful Laundrette doesn't have quite the same impact as it did when the film was released in 1985, but Stephen Frears’ biting indictment of the sharpened divisions between the rich and the poor, left and right, black and white under Thatcher is certainly still worth it in 2026.
The Oscar-nominated script was written by Hanif Kureishi, son of a Pakistani father and English mother.
