My Uncle is set between two worlds that sharply contrast with each other: a hyper-modern, sterile housing estate and a more traditional, vibrant environment. In the ultramodern home of the Arpel family, everything is automated and tightly organized, but because of this, there is little room for spontaneity or play. Their son Gérard grows up in this controlled environment and visibly gets bored. The arrival of Monsieur Hulot, the brother of Madame Arpel, disrupts this carefully ordered world. His carefree and playful way of life constantly clashes with the logic of efficiency and design, leading to a series of comedic situations. At the same time, he becomes an unexpected source of imagination and freedom for young Gérard. To limit his influence, Hulot is even put to work at his brother-in-law's plastic factory, where he again causes chaos within a system that just wants to function perfectly.
The film has been restored in 4K, enhancing the visual precision of Tati’s mise-en-scène, the architecture of the modern world, and the physical comedy even more. My Uncle thus marks the transition to Tati’s more analytical and visually composed cinema, where humor arises from space, rhythm, and the collision between man and modern environment.
