Playful, atmospheric character study of a restless young adult, co-produced by Luca Guadagnino. The 19-year-old Leonardo wants nothing more than to leave Palermo and his dominant mother behind. Lacking better options, he follows his older, partying sister to London to study business, but he soon returns to Italy and becomes increasingly tangled up with himself. Impulsively, he decides to study classical Italian literature in Siena. However, the somewhat stubborn Leonardo struggles to adapt and has little contact with his housemates. He locks himself in his room, complaining about his professor who he believes misunderstands Dante entirely. He moves to Turin, where his ideas about literature and writing become increasingly rigid.
Writer/director Giovanni Tortorici (Palermo, 1996) worked as an assistant director intern on the set of Luca Guadagnino's series We Are Who We Are. He continued his collaboration with Guadagnino as a cameraman and assistant director on short films and music videos. Diciannove is his first feature film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
