Parade is not a traditional feature film, but a filmed circus performance in which Jacques Tati himself appears as Monsieur Loyal at the Stockholm Circus. Within a playful and often absurd participatory spectacle, he leads the audience through a series of performances by musicians, jugglers, magicians, and acrobats, blurring the lines between artist and spectator. Instead of a classic narrative, the film is entirely focused on performance, rhythm, and interaction. Tati acts as the master of ceremonies, facilitating the transitions between acts while simultaneously bringing his own pantomime-like style to life again. The film thus takes on the character of a lively tribute to variety and the direct contact between performer and audience.
The film has also been restored in 4K, allowing the colors and the physical presence of the performers in the circus events to be vividly expressed once more. Parade serves as a kind of concluding gesture in Tati’s career: a warm, playful passing of his artistic language to a new generation of performers, and a celebration of the live spectacle itself.
