AKI Fine Arts and Concordia_kunstruimte are joining forces in an exciting new project called Paviljoen. Here, the exhibition halls function as a space for experimentation, for seeking dialogue with new audiences, for escaping the studio and academy walls, and for presenting ideas and research. It is a chance for AKI students to present their work in a professional context, while also organizing their own openings, events, and performances.

“Dialogue” is the starting point for everything that happens in our kunstruimte: the exhibitions, the creative process, and the encounter between audience and art, and between people themselves. The exhibitions we present emerge through and with the makers, the public, the space, and the passing of time.

This cannot happen without the input of the youngest generation of artists, who are shaping their own ideas about what visual art can mean for both maker and visitor, and for society at large. With an art academy and a conservatory in our city, we are fortunate to be so close to the source, and for Concordia_kunstruimte it feels only natural to build a connection with these artists and musicians, offering a platform for their voices.

In architecture, the term paviljoen refers to an autonomous, standalone building with its own function, form, and use. There is always a link to a main building, yet autonomy plays a decisive role. Concordia_kunstruimte is a temporary paviljoen, a place where AKI students present their work in an autonomous way, temporarily detached from the academic bubble in which they spend the rest of the year.

Starting on 3 April, four short exhibitions by AKI Fine Arts students will be on view. Every two weeks a new artist, duo, or group takes over the space, working with the Concordia team to reflect on their practice within our exhibition hall. You are warmly invited to attend the openings, events, and even the installation process, and to engage in dialogue with these young artists.
