Intriguing neo-noir tale by Lou Ye, with the Suzhou River in Shanghai as a dramatic guide. It tells the story of a beloved who throws herself into the river but returns as a nightclub dancer. A nighttime portrait of an old metropolis in gritty images.
Suzhou River is the account of an obsession, inspired by Hitchcock's Vertigo, in which James Stewart searches for his dead beloved. At the same time, the film is constructed as a frame story, seen through the eyes of an anonymous videographer, and provided with a voice-over. The images are shot from the shoulder and take the viewer into the nighttime side of the metropolis.
