In war-torn Yorkshire in 1916, the local choir is at risk of disappearing as almost all the men have gone to the front. The board of the Choral Society, determined to continue, is forced to recruit its singers from the village boys - teenagers who themselves are about to be called up for military service. At the same time, a new conductor needs to be appointed. The choice falls on Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), a driven and uncompromising musician who has recently returned from Germany. Under Guthrie’s strict but passionate leadership, the boys discover the power of singing together: camaraderie, solace, and a glimmer of hope in a time dominated by loss and uncertainty.
The Choral is a warm and nostalgic drama, directed by BAFTA, Olivier, and Tony Award-winner Nicholas Hytner, known for works such as The Lady in the Van, The History Boys, and The Madness of King George. The beautifully written script comes from the also acclaimed British writer Alan Bennett and marks their fourth collaboration. The film is supported by an impressive lead performance from Ralph Fiennes (Conclave, Schindler's List) as the reluctant choir leader Dr. Guthrie.
