Ireland 1981. With another child on the way, there is not enough space for the young, introverted Cáit (Catherine Clinch) with her parents. She is sent to stay with family in the countryside for a summer, where she is lovingly welcomed by Aunt Eibhlín (Carrie Crowley). Cáit's stern uncle Seán (Andrew Bennett) struggles more with her presence. Gradually, Cáit discovers that there are also secrets in this house. Yet she blooms, but every summer must come to an end. The film tells a universal story about finding your own place, seen through the eyes of young Cáit. Both the Irish language and the beautiful landscape color her world.
The small film The Quiet Girl received wonderful reviews in 2022, became a major arthouse hit, and received an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature in 2023.
The film will be shown once more, in collaboration with Studium Generale at the University of Twente. On Tuesday, May 12, a film scholar at UT will give a free lecture titled ‘From Film Clichés to Original New Cinema’ (in Dutch). On Tuesday, May 19, The Quiet Girl, which fits perfectly with this, will be shown at Concordia.
