The Watermelon Woman

Cheryl Dunye
  • Film
  • Playful and groundbreaking film classic that explores the history of black lesbians.

The Watermelon Woman is a sharp metamix of film studies and romantic comedy all in one. Dunye provides profound commentary on the erasure of black film history in Hollywood, while also painting a humorous picture of the academic habitat known as 'queer media studies.' Dunye's first feature film – also the first feature directed by a black lesbian woman – premiered at the Berlinale in 1996 and won the Teddy Award for Best LGBTQIA+ Feature Film. In the Netherlands, the film has not been shown in theaters before.

    About Previously Unreleased
All summer long, we will be screening a new film each week in collaboration with Eye Filmmuseum that has been shown at prominent festivals both domestically and internationally, but has yet to reach Dutch cinemas. Eye believes this is unfair and is bringing a special selection of films from international festivals to the Netherlands this year.
