Avant-Garde Cinema Night

hosted by Peng Zuqiang & Giovanni Giaretta
  • Film
  • Een avond met experimentele korte films waarin film en beeldende kunst samenkomen.

Peng Zuqiang creates video work at the intersection of film and visual art. He has a unique perspective on the medium and material of film. Until May 3, the exhibition Chronical is on view at Langestraat, featuring works by Zuqiang.

During the Avant Garde Cinema Night, our cinema will screen a selection of stunning short films. The program includes work by Zuqiang himself and by renowned filmmakers who have influenced him.

The evening will be presented by Giovanni Giaretta, lecturer in the History of Moving Image at AKI-Artez, and himself an artist and filmmaker.

    Filmprogramma:

Sight Leak (Peng Zuqiang, 2022, 12')
“The moon, the sometimes dark street, trees, it's warm […] at last, a certain eroticism possible (that of the warm night).” When Roland Barthes visited China in 1973, he jotted down these impressions… Sight Leak engages with these impressions and their cinematic afterlives.

Sunflower Siege Engine (Sky Hopinka, 2022, 13’)
Moments of resistance are collapsed and woven together; from documentation of the Indigenous led occupation of Alcatraz, to the reclamation of Cahokia and the repatriation of the ancestors, to one’s reflections on their body as they exist in the world today, These are gestures that meditate on the carceral inception and nature of the reservation system, and where sovereignty and belligerence intersect and diverge.

Night Dances (Sandra Lahire, 1995, 15')
“Night Dances is for my mother, who died whilst helping me to make this piano musical. The Dance of Death is bound to life – Lechaim – as we whirl together by Hebrew gravestones. A dreaming woman is ferried through our decaying city. This is the age of the Personal Computer – the Private Catacomb for the switched-on elite. Its dark doorways are for the wandering homeless… true survivors.”

If You Don’t Watch the Way You Move (Kevin Jerome Everson, 12’)
Derek “Dripp” Whitfield Jr. and Taymond “ChoSkii” Hughes of the music group BmE are composing and recording their latest composition, “Shiesty”, in the Columbus, Mississippi studio, only to be interrupted by a John Cage score.
