Sharif plays the literarily gifted doctor-poet Yuri Zhivago, who becomes entangled in a tumultuous affair with Lara (Julie Christie). Their love is heavily tested by the Russian Revolution, the great destroyer of the old classes of landowners and wealthy bourgeoisie.
Although the film attracted packed cinemas, critics were very critical upon its release, yet the film received numerous awards. The beautiful cinematography, art direction, and robust score (“Lara's theme”) earned the creators five Oscars, among other accolades; Lean filmed the acclaimed shots of the vast Russian landscape in Spain, and for the supporting roles, he cast Geraldine Chaplin and Klaus Kinski, among others.
We are screening this film as part of the exhibition On Being Elsewhere currently on display at Concordia and selected by Rosella Nisio, one of the exhibiting artists. Prior to the film, Rosella will give a tour of the exhibition at our location on Langestraat. This tour starts at 14:15 and is free to attend.
